About Davenport Speedway

Davenport Speedway in Davenport, IA has an interesting history. The speedway is a semi-banked, dirt-track oval with track lengths of a half mile and a quarter mile. It’s located on the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, which also hosts the Mississippi Valley Fair. It now hosts dirt racing events on a weekly basis.

It became the first track in Iowa to host a NASCAR event in 1953 when it held a race for what would later become the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. That race featured 14 cars, with Buck Baker starting at pole position and Herb Thomas winning the race in the end.

The location of the speedway is the same location where a one-mile track once stood. Historical documents show that this track was indeed used for car racing from 1904 to 1916. It also hosted the first-ever automobile race in Davenport in 1904. That race was won by Pete Peterson of Davenport, who was a nationally-known racer at the time.

But even before that much-publicized race, in 1900 the Davenport Mile Track hosted a race between two automobiles, which were still very new inventions and rarely seen up to that point. This was likely the first auto race in the entire state of Iowa.
